Reblog: Tea Party Wages War on Public Libraries

Tea Party Wages War on Public Libraries by David Morris

The sheer amount of selfish, short-sighted, mean-spirited pig-headed stupid in this story boggles the mind. The existence of the Tea Party and the fact that they have not been laughed out of existence–the nervous, unamused, you’ve-got-to-be-messing-with-me-no-one-is-this-deliberately-ignorant kind of laughter–is a large part of why job-hunting in the States is so unattractive to me right now. Admittedly, I skew heavily to the left in my social opinions, but still… It’s hard to come up with a better example of a few people ruining something good for a lot of people who have outright said that the public library is wanted and valuable. Not that Canada’s record is considerably better, between the Ford brothers here in the GTA last year (seriously, look up Margaret Atwood and Doug Ford, it was hilarious), and the closing of Libraries and Archives Canada, but that’s another post.

My sincerest sympathies to Kentucky. May the Tea Party all go boil their heads with their teabags.
